As we approach our 50th year of independence this October, it’s time to sit back and think about the accomplishments Nigeria has made over time. Although, there is still much to do in ensuring that our nation is amongst the top amongst world leaders, it is also important to give credit to all those who have relied on their own strengths and talents in building our nation.
When we think about the champions who have led (and are still leading) Nigeria to it’s full potential, we cannot help but to be amazed by all of the Nigerian women who have contributed in the fields of science, politics, journalism, entertainment, and fashion. Our women continue to take Nigeria to new heights, without receiving the recognition that they deserve. But we see you. We hear you. And most importantly, we appreciate you! Nigerian women of all ethnic groups have been at the forefront of all things notable and thus the reason why we dedicated this issue to our women. This “Women’s Issue” is intended to celebrate the accomplishments and tenacity of our Nigerian women- young and old. Whether they be our political leaders, our entrepreneurs, our mothers, or religious advisors, Nigerian women have been a part of every triumph Nigerian has celebrated. This issue is for all of the mothers, sisters, and aunties who are called to duty day to day both in their domestic homes and in the work place. It’s for the women who know how to be calm and nurturing at home, but fierce and resilient in the work place. Women are asked to wear many hats, playing various roles but through it all, still be the person they know how to be. Whether at the age of 20 or 65, our Nigerian women do all that they do with beauty, strength, and wisdom. How many of our moms at the age of 50 are working multiple jobs in addition to taking care of their homes, and can still go to a party, with their high geles, and colorful aso ebi, dancing and laughing harder than us, looking just as they did at 22? I’m sure all those that are reading this right now are nodding their heads in acquiescence.
So to all of our glorious women, this is for you! As we continue to work hard for our families and our nation, let us recognize the beauty in ourselves and in other women. I challenge all of you to look to another woman and say “You’re beautiful”, because we all are. And we will remain so, so long as we take care of and support one another. Together we will raise cities of greatness.
God bless our Nigerian women!
